Hi Kids,

I’ve been playing baseball since I was 6 years old. I started by playing catch with my dad in our front yard in El Cajon, California. On my first day of baseball practice, my coach said, "kids...run to the position you want to play." I ran straight to the pitchers mound -- I just knew I was born to be a pitcher. Something you might not know that I think is pretty cool...is that I am really right handed. For some reason, I picked up the baseball with my left hand and you know the rest of the story--I'm a left handed pitcher.

When I was 12 years old, my parents arranged for me to take pitching lessons from Randy Jones, a Cy Young Award winner from the San Diego Padres. Randy first taught me how to throw the curve ball. Sometimes when Randy was teaching me things, my mind would wander and he got my attention by spitting his tobacco juice right on my shoes. I didn't like that very much but he certainly got me to pay attention.

There are three points that I think are really important. THEY WEREN'T always easy for me, but with the help of my family, they made sure I did these things and I hope you will too.

1) Eat healthy food and get plenty of rest:
This will nourish your body and help you to grow strong.

2) Listen to your parents:
Your parents only want the best for you and they have life experiences that you don't yet have. I remember that my parents always reinforced everything I did with positive comments instead of negative ones, even when there were times I could have done better. They knew that it was important for me to learn life lessons while playing sports...lessons like good sportsmanship and how to deal with the ups and downs that is just a part of life. I still discuss so many things with my parents and I often look to their good judgement.

3) Do your best in school and continue to learn:
Your education is key to growing into a successful adult. My parents instilled the love of learning in me and I hope you will want to learn all that you can too. As a kid, I read a lot of books and still today reading is one of my most favorite things to do. I don't watch much television and I'm not really into video games. Instead, I read, listen to music, play my guitar and workout.

Please visit this page often because this will be the place where you can also ask me questions and I will do my best to answer them. You may see your question posted right here.

I hope to hear from you!
