On The Field FACTS • Barry Zito is a three-time American League All-Star (2002, 2003 and 2006) and was the 2002 American League recipient of pitching’s highest honor, the Cy Young Award. • During his tenure with the Oakland Athletics, Barry helped lift the club into the postseason five times in his first seven seasons in the Major Leagues. The A's won the American League West Division in 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2006 and captured the A.L. Wild Card berth in 2001. • The A's collected the second most wins in Major League Baseball in the five years from 2002-2006. • One of baseball’s most durable starting pitchers, Barry has made at least 34 starts in each of his full Major League seasons and has never been on the disabled list. His 255 games started since 2001 are the most in all of Major League Baseball. • In the full seasons in Barry's career, from 2001-2006, his 95 wins were the fourth most in all of Major League Baseball. • In his six career Division Series starts, the owner of baseball’s most devastating curveball has a 4-2 record and a 2.43 ERA (40.2 IP, 11 ER, 33 SO). • Barry was named the winner of the A.L. Cy Young Award by the Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWAA) following his 23-5 season in 2002. Earning pitching’s top prize at the age of 24, Barry became the youngest Cy Young Award winner since Roger Clemens was also 24 in 1986…his 23 wins were the most by an A.L. left-hander since Minnesota’s Frank Viola earned 24 wins in 1988…he was also named A.L. Pitcher of the Year by The Sporting News. • In 2006, Barry anchored the A's to their first American League Championship Series since 1992. In a classic match-up in Game One of the Division Series against fellow Cy Young Award winner Johan Santana, Barry tossed eight innings of four-hit, one-run ball as Oakland took the opener in Minnesota; the A’s went on to sweep the series.....His 16 wins were his most since 2002 (23-5, 2.75), when he won the AL Cy Young Award. • Barry’s 102 wins for the A’s rank fourth in Oakland history, behind only Hall of Famer Jim “Catfish” Hunter (131) and fellow A’s aces Vida Blue (124) and Dave Stewart (119).
